One of the major themes that reappears throughout the novella is that of Holy Gollightly believing herself to be a wild animal, and in that way she cannot be controlled or held captive by anyone else. Such as when Doc first found her an her brother stealing food from him back in Texas. Doc took them in and healed them to the best that he could but she was always a wild animal and could never be held against her own will which is why she left Doc ad why she refused to go back to him again. This is also why she refuses to make permanent relationships with anyone. She even refuses to name her own cat in fear that the name will mean commitment and that she will be trapped by it like an animal in a zoo. Because of this the job of an escort is the perfect job for her since she never has to be to close to one of her clients, in one day and out the there with a man waiting to meet her. Holly continues to think of herself as a wild animal who can never be held down until the end of the novella, when she picks up everything and gets on a plan to Brazil with little to no planning. Because, she believes she has no ties to one place or another. But, even after she does has ties like to her nameless cat that she tries to throw away she still gets on the plane and flies away.
